Making your cats treats might not be as convenient as popping into the store, but when you opt for homemade, there are more options and you can cater to your cats' specific needs.
"Knowing exactly what ingredients go into the mix is especially helpful if your Kitty suffers from a touchy tummy," says Ashley Poskin.
We have borrowed her recipe from Martha Stewart Living that is made from only three ingredients and can be easily changed to fit your cats' taste preferences or dietary needs.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour, (plus a few additional tablespoons)
- 1 (3.75 oz.) can of sardines
Supplies
- rolling pin
- food processor
- cookie sheet
- parchment paper
- mini cookie cutters (optional)
-
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
-
Purée the can of sardines (with the oils) in a food processor, then add one egg and a 1/2 cup flour.
-
Pulse until well blended.
-
Continue to add flour, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture begins to pull away from the sides of the food processor and just starts to form a ball.
-
Once the consistency is that of pie dough, remove from the food processor and place on a floured surface.
-
Roll the dough on a floured surface until it forms a ball, then roll it out with a well-floured rolling pin until it is approximately 1/4 inch thick. You can cut out the treats any way you choose, but we recommend keeping each individual treat 1 by 1 inch or slightly smaller.
-
Once you've cut out all the treats, place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet and line them up so that they are close, but not touching.
-
Bake treats in the oven at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
-
Once the treats are beginning to brown, remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container for storage.
